The "Black" group of paintings resides in that category
of art exhibition in which nothing makes a lot of sense
to the lay person's eye, much less the conscious mind.
The works don't even appear to be black or abstract all
the time, as in the picture just to the left of this bit of
writing, this apparent statement of purpose, or, more
accurate, the lack of purpose. After a glance: Couldn't
that be like a seashell lying on a beach? Couldn't the
brown and white painting at the top simply be a
depiction of some kind of explosion, say in a mine or the
blast resulting from a torpedoed ship? I, the lay painter,
would say after some important thought, "Maybe." After
more thought, "What do you think? ... Take your time."

But the paintings do share something kin to a common
and unifying element among themselves; or perhaps
sometimes it just appears they do. Most of them have at
least one area, one blob, even one thread of paint that
seems to fit into a common shade or tint, usually black,
or at least quite dark, or, most important let's say:
However you want to think of it. The painter, after more
wrenching and important cogitation, steps back,
pronounces it all good and says in profound severity to
a companion, "How's about
Black ... as a title, I mean."

There are ten paintings in the series. All are shown here.
